Les verbs - le passé composé: avoir ou être?
Sometimes it is difficult to remember how to conjugate a verb in passé composé because there are so many steps involved. Follow this 'flow chart' to help you learn the steps.

1. Look at the verb you are given. Decide if it is a DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verb or not.
If it is a DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verb, go to step 2a).
If it is not a DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verb, go to step 2b).


2a). DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verbs use être as their auxilliary verb. Look at the subject you are given. Write the correct form of être for that subject.
Go to step 3a).


2b). Verbs that are not DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verbs use avoir as their auxilliary verb. Look at the subject you are given. Write the correct form of avoir for that subject.
Go to step 3b).


3a). Now that you have être, you need to write what your verb changes to in the past tense. Check first if your verb is irregular! Write its past tense form beside your conjugated form of être.
Go to step 4.


3b). Now that you have avoir, you need to write what your verb changes to in the past tense. Check first if your verb is irregular! Write its past tense form beside your conjugated form of avoir.
Congratulations! You are done conjugating your verb in the passé composé!


4. DRMRSVANDERTRAMP verbs add endings to agree with their subject. Look at the subject you are given. Decide if it is masculine, feminine, singular, or plural.
If it is masculine singular, then congratulations! You are done conjugating your verb in the passé composé!
If it is feminine singular, go to step 5a).
If it is masculine plural, go to step 5b).
If it is feminine plural, go to step 5c).


5a). For feminine singular, add an E on the end of your verb.
Congratulations! You are done conjugating your verb in the passé composé!


5b). For masculine plural, add an S on the end of your verb.
Congratulations! You are done conjugating your verb in the passé composé!


5c). For feminine plural, add an ES on the end of your verb.
Congratulations! You are done conjugating your verb in the passé composé!
